Announcement of important dog licensing changes
Director of Navajo County Animal Control Dr. Montana Slack announced today that
in an effort to increase rabies vaccination compliance and to make dog licensing
easier, more convenient and affordable for county residents, the County Board of
Supervisors has approved some major changes to our existing dog licensing requirements.
On December 28, 2010 the following changes to dog licensing were approved:
- CHANGE IN LICENSE DURATION AND PERIOD – We are changing from a calendar year (Jan1st
through Dec 31st) system to a license that runs concurrently with the rabies vaccination.
All dog licenses will expire on the expiration date of the current rabies vaccination.
This will allow each dog’s license to be valid for up to three years.
- CHANGE IN LICENSE FEES – We are reducing the fees for dog licensing to make it more
affordable. Currently an unaltered dog costs $15 per year if licensed before March
15th and $20 per year if licensed after March 15th. An altered (spay or neutered)
dog currently costs $5 per year if licensed before March 15th and $10 if licensed
after March 15th. We will no longer differentiate between altered and unaltered
dogs. A new dog license will cost only $5 for the duration of the license period
when obtained from your veterinarian, animal clinic, animal shelter, or county office.
- ADDED CONVENIENCE – In addition to veterinarians, animal clinics and shelters, licenses
will now also be available at Public Works offices in Show Low, Heber, and Holbrook
and via the Internet through a web license application portal. For Internet web
applications, the applicant MUST be able to upload the current rabies vaccination
certificate at the time of the application process. All licenses obtained through
the internet process are free!
What if my dog was licnesed under the old system and the rabies vaccination
is still good?
If your dog was licensed during 2010 under the old system and the license expired
on Dec 31, 2010 but the rabies vaccination certificate is still valid, you may reapply
for a new FREE dog license on-line. You dog’s license would then be good until the
current rabies vaccination expires.
Incoming Calls
As of Feb 24, 2010, all incoming Animal Control calls go directly to Navajo County
Sheriff Dispatch and no longer go directly to voicemail. This change was made to
better serve the citizens of Navajo County by providing a live person to take their
report 24/7. This change insures more complete information is received and also
gives us the ability to track all response times. To report a problem to Navajo

Navajo County Animal Control is primarily responsible for
- Enforcing all laws of the state and all ordinances of the county pertaining to domestic
animals
- Enforcing all laws pertaining to rabies control
- Investigation of all animal bites and enforcement of mandatory quarantines
- Investigation of animal abuse and cruelty cases
- Investigation of nuisance situations
- Investigation of vicious or dangerous dogs
- Impoundment of stray or at-large domestic animals

- Increase spay/neuter efforts
- Reduce the number of animals that need sheltering
- Increase license and vaccination compliance
- Reduce animal bites
- Reduce euthanasia
- Increase education and outreach efforts
- Proactively participate in anti-cruelty efforts
