Navajo County
County Attorney
The County Attorney’s Office provides many services to the citizens of Navajo County.
Prosecuting crime is the primary role, with several other important functions
necessary to the residents. The County Attorney’s currently employs eleven criminal
prosecutors and one civil attorney.
In addition to serving Navajo County as a whole, this includes service to the Hopi
Tribe, Navajo Nation and White Mountain Apache Tribe as sovereign nations. Most
crimes on tribal lands fall under federal or tribal authorities, although several
cases a year are prosecuted by the County Attorney’s office.
The County Attorney’s office also assists with negotiating intergovernmental agreements
between the County and tribal authorities or the Bureau of Indian Affairs. These
negotiations normally assist with projects benefitting tribal lands by creating
roads and helping ensure close cooperation between county officials and tribal authorities
on everything from homeland security to public health projects.
We are proud of our part in fostering closer relationships with the tribes and providing
comprehensive service to Navajo County.
