School Programs

The following are the SNAP-Ed programs and activities:

Nutritious Story Time with Buddy Bear Hand Washing (8 part series) is used with Head Start, WIC Clinics and Kindergarten classes

MyPyramid Logo

This is a literacy program (each lesson is 30 minutes) that encourages reading, teaches positive health and nutrition messages. A children’s book with health/nutrition messages are read by a health educator to the classroom. Children then play games, sing songs, and have craft projects that reinforce the theme of the book. You are encouraged to invite parents to these lessons.

MyPyramid for Kids (3 part series) is used with 1st grade

The lessons (each lesson is 40 minutes) will help students learn about the MyPyramid for Kids. The lessons are designed to integrate nutrition with science, math, health and language arts. Eating more fruits and veggies and physical activity will also be emphasized.

Fruits and Veggies More Matters (4 part series) is used with 2nd grade

This state-wide curriculum is presented by program staff (each lesson is 60 minutes) includes a field trip to the produce store). The lessons focus on eating 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables to prevent certain cancers and heart disease.

MyPyramid for Kids (3 part series) is used with 3rd grade

The lessons will help students learn about the MyPyramid for Kids. Lessons are 45 minutes each and designed to integrate nutrition with science, math, health and language arts. Eating more fruits and veggies and menu planning will also be emphasized.

Whole Grains (3 part series) is used with 4th grade

The lessons (each lesson is 60 minutes) will help students learn about the benefits of whole grains and how they can incorporate whole grains into their daily food intake.

Building Better Bones (3 part series) is used with 5th grade

This state-wide curriculum is presented by Navajo County Health Department Nutrition Staff in a series of three classroom lessons (each lesson is 60 minutes) focusing on the importance of eating calcium rich, low-fat foods and building strong bones through daily physical activity.

MyPyramid for Kids (3 part series) is used with 6th grade

The lessons (each lesson is 50 minutes) will help students learn about the MyPyramid for Kids. The lessons are designed to integrate nutrition with science, math, health and language arts. Eating calcium rich, low-fat foods and choosing lean proteins will also be emphasized.

Eat Fit with 7th Grades (5 part series)

The 60 minute lessons in the Eat Fit emphasize goal setting and include nutrition basics, diet and fitness analysis, energy and calorie counting, exercise how's and why's, fast food facts, and how breakfast can make you feel better. In this curriculum, students analyze their eating and fitness levels, and has the freedom to choose which aspects they would like to improve. The lessons are designed to integrate nutrition with science, math, health and language arts.

Media Smart with 8th Grades (5 part series)

The Media-Smart Youth lessons focus on building media analysis to help young people understand the connections between media and health. The 60 minute lessons uses nutrition and physical activity examples to help youth learn about these connections and to build their media analysis skills.

  • August through September-Teacher and program orientation with new partners and school districts.
  • October through May-The program staff schedules and presents the nutrition education lessons in the class rooms, work with teachers, and collect teacher time documentation forms.
  • May through August-The program staff schedules and presents at health fairs, summer programs for kids, and in the SNAP offices.
