Navajo County Public Defender
A Message from the Public Defender
Welcome to the Navajo County Public Defender website. Our principal offices are
located in the Navajo County Governmental Complex 2 miles south of Holbrook, Arizona.
Additionally, we have offices in most of the Justice Courts of the six precincts
in Navajo County. We hope you find the information provided helpful. When we are
court-appointed as your counsel, you will receive a letter at the address you provided
at your initial appearance advising that a lawyer has been assigned to you, your
next court appointment, and some instructions. Please read the letter carefully.
If you are incarcerated, your lawyer will contact you after disclosure has been
received from the prosecutor.
Department Description
The Public Defender represents indigent defendants charged with felony and misdemeanor
crimes. The United States Constitution guarantees the right to counsel in all criminal
prosecutions. All fifty States have incorporated that constitutional right through
the Fourteenth Amendment. Our office is staffed by six lawyers, one investigator,
and four support staff. We handle cases in the justice courts of Holbrook, Kayenta,
Winslow, Snowflake, Show Low, Pinetop-Lakeside, and Navajo County Superior Court.
Additionally, we handle juvenile matters, mental health proceedings, extraditions
and proceedings in Drug Court, Mental Health Court and Domestic Violence Courts.
Mission Statement
Our office is dedicated to protecting the fundamental rights of indigent defendants
by providing superior legal representation in criminal cases. Collectively, our
lawyers have more than 100 years of experience in the practice of law. Our mission
includes a genuine commitment to your defense, and education as to your rights and
the criminal justice process. As your advocate, we zealously guard your confidences,
thoroughly investigate the facts of your case, review evidence, and consider all
possible defenses. We will confer with you throughout the representation, and you
will receive copies of all documents received by our office pertaining to your case.
Through mutual collaboration, we will work together toward the best possible disposition
of your case.
