Presenter Bio

Mr. Blevins is a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner who has been practicing in the field of Child Abuse Pediatrics for 34 years , who, at the present time, in practice in Mesa, AZ.  Over the course of his career, Mr. Blevins has evaluated literally thousands of children for all types of suspected abuse & has been qualified as an expert medical witness in the State & Federal Courts over 6 states & in one military court martial.  Along with his clinical practice, Mr. Blevins frequently teaches on both the local & national levels & enjoys clinical teaching with physicians, residents, & medical students. He also enjoys teaching the medical aspects of child abuse investigation to investigators & prosecutors.  While many medical concepts involved in child abuse can be rather complicated for most lay people (& many medical professionals as well!)  Mr. Blevins strives to make them accessible to learners of all types & levels of experience.

 

Presentation Description

This presentation, "Strangulation in Infants & Children",  is designed to review the biomechanics & pathophysiology of strangulation injury & death.  Though unusual in child abuse fatalities, strangulation cases may be very confusing for investigators & prosecutors.  Attention in this talk is focused on giving those professionals a firm foundation of medical knowledge on which to build their investigations & cases.

OBJECTIVES

  • Describe the major differences between the adult & young child's airway.
  • Identify physical findings that may indicate a strangulation injury or death.
  • Describe & differentiate the various type of strangulations.
